1. Nigeria Gives Six Conditions For School’s Reopening

Ahead of the reopening of universities and others, the Federal Government has listed six conditions to be met by each school as a way of protecting pupils and students against Coronavirus.

The Minister of State for Education, Hon. Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba announced the conditions in Abuja on Tuesday at the 2022 Policy Meeting on Admissions to Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

Among other conditions, the government is demanding decontamination of all schools and new class sizes which will accommodate social and physical distancing as it urged all heads of schools to start putting measures in place to meet the terms.

2. ASUU Blames Low Ranking Of Nigerian Universities On Government

Academic Staff Union of Universities has blamed the unimpressive ranking of Nigerian universities by the Center for World University Ranking on the failure of the Federal Government to make education as its priority.

The union said if the government had heeded its numerous calls to provide an enabling environment for education especially in tertiary institutions across the country, the ranking was only two Nigerian Universities, the University of Ibadan, and the University of Nigeria made the world best 2,000 would have been better.

3. Minister: Nigerian Universities Working On Vaccine, Cure For Coronavirus

The federal government has disclosed that researchers in the country’s universities are working on vaccines and cures for COVID-19.

It has also commenced local production of ventilators as part of efforts to ensure COVID-19 patients who require intensive care equipment get them.

Speaking on an Arise TV program, Tuesday, the Minister of State for Education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, said so far, a N5 billion fund had been created for research and that coordinated activities had commenced among researchers in the country on finding vaccines that could help in the prevention of the coronavirus disease.

4. ASUU Strike: Nigerian Government Meets Again With Lecturers Today

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the federal government will again meet today, Tuesday, to resolve the ongoing warning strike by the lecturers. The meeting was confirmed by senior officials of the union Monday night.

“We will be meeting with the federal government by 3 p.m.,” an official said. Also, according to one of the sources, “the federal government has not paid our salaries, however, they have paid those who are enrolled on IPPIS.

5. President Buhari Awards Scholarships To Three Students Up To PhD

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday awarded a scholarship to three secondary school students who emerged winners at the 2022 Young Nigerian Scientists Presidential Award Competition.

The scholarship will fund their education up to the Doctor of Philosophy in science disciplines of their choice in Nigerian universities.

Buhari spoke while declaring open the 2022 Science, Technology, and Innovation Expo at the Eagle Square, Abuja, with the theme, ‘Enhancing The Growth of a Diversified Economy Through Science and Technology.’

6. ASUU Strike Continues Despite Dialogue With Authorities

The two weeks warning strike by the Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU) continues as the Federal Government gave conditions to integrate the University Transparency Accountability Solution (UTAS) into the Integrated Payroll Personnel Information System (IPPIS).

Following a four-hour technical session between the Federal Government team led by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Sen. Chris Ngige and the leadership of ASUU, the minister revealed that the government has given conditions for the UTAS, to be integrated into IPPIS.

7. Lecturers Withdraw Services Over Ph.D. Requirement

The Medical and Dental Consultants’ Association of Nigeria (MDCAN), University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) Chapter, said its members, clinical lecturers, have withdrawn from teaching medical students.

The association made this know on Friday in a release jointly signed by its President, Prof. Usang E Usang, and Secretary, Dr. Henry Okpa, which was made available to newsmen in Lagos.

It said the decision was taken at an emergency general meeting of MDCAN, UTCH Chapter, on the circular released by the National Universities Commission (NUC).

8. Official: N86 Billion Earned Allowance Paid To Lecturers In Seven Years

The Federal Government has revealed that the sum of N86 billion has been paid to members of academic unions of the tertiary institutions as earned academic allowances between 2013 to 2022 financial years.

Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, Arc. Sonny Echono, made this known, on Tuesday in Abuja, when he received the House of Representatives Committee on Tertiary Education and Services, who visited the Ministry on an oversight function.

9. Governor Okowa Task Universities To Produce Self-Reliant Graduates

Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta has urged Nigerian universities to produce graduates that would be self-reliant and not job seekers.

The governor said this on Sunday in Abraka, at a reception organized in honor of Prof. Andy Egwuyenga, Vice-Chancellor, Delta State University, Abraka.

Okowa said that graduates of Nigerian universities should be able to compete favorably with their peers in the world as well as be innovative in creating jobs for themselves.

10. IPPIS: ASUU Threatens No-Pay-No-Work Action

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) University of Agriculture Makurdi (UAM) chapter, has resolved to down tools should the Federal Government fail to pay its members their monthly entitlements on account of the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS).

ASUU UAM Chairman, Dr. Ameh Ejembi, disclosed this to newsmen shortly after their emergency meeting with which held at the Science Lecture Theatre of the university on Thursday evening.

11. NUC Splits Mass Communication Into Seven Other Degree Programmes

The National Universities Commission (NUC) says it has not abolished the study of Mass Communication in Nigerian universities, saying that the course has just been unbundled into seven other degree programs.

Mr. Ibrahim Yakasai, the NUC Director of Corporate Affairs disclosed this on Friday in Abuja while clarifying the commission’s position on some online reports claiming that the NUC had phased out Mass Communication.
